Devolver Digital has acquired Astroneer developer System Era Softworks, the companies announced.
In the announcement, Devolver Digital reveals that eight years ago it made the “terrible mistake” of almost publishing Astroneer (as opposed to actually publishing it). But despite their separate paths, Devolver Digital and System Era Softworks remained mutual admirers as each company grew.
The announcement continues, “Today, after almost a decade of mutual admiration and friendship, Devolver Digital and System Era declare their undying love for one another in the only way they know how: by turning down the lights, turning up the heat, and forming a strategic business relationship.”
In a statement, System Era Softworks CEO Brendan Wilson said, “We’ve always seen Devolver’s banner as a mark of quality. Their developer-first ethos has paved the way for some of the boldest and most creative ideas to thrive, and we’re thrilled to be joining a merry band of like-minded people where our games will get the support they need within a culture they love.”
System Era Softworks will continue to ‘make cool video games’ under Devolver Digital as a first-party studio. Some of the team has already begun working on something “new and exciting,” and the Astroneer roadmap for 2024 is also well on its way.
