After pushing back the initial release of, Bungie showed off game-breaking new systems and challenges coming to the looter-shooter. is believed to be the last major expansion of and wraps up the Light and Darkness Saga that began over a decade ago. This DLC will not be the last new content, as Bungie has already confirmed three episodic updates — replacing the current seasonal model — that will tell stories about the enemy factions that have stayed out of the grand scheme of the saga.
originally had a preview in August 2023 with a February 2024 release date and some new content announcements. This new content included a new Light super for each of the original three subclasses and revealed the location was inside the mysterious Traveler. One of the biggest reveals teased a few months earlier was that fan-favorite Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 would be returning with Nathan Fillion reprising his role. Besides that, not much was known, and the community response was not happy, which could have been one of the reasons for the delay.
Unless unforeseen actions cause a second delay, is set to release on June 4, 2024. Though it was unfortunate that the DLC had to be delayed, it followed the trend of recent Destiny 2 expansions that required more time. This delay could have been due to several factors, with possible options being an underwhelming fan response and a smaller workforce since Bungie has been working on multiple IPs as a semi-independent studio. Sony recently purchased Bungie, but the acquisition has been seen as an overpay made out of desperation by some.
