As we get ready for Dungeons & Dragons core rules revamp later this year, Wizards of the Coast is taking the chance to update some older adventures to fifth edition in its latest compilation book.
Quests From The Infinite Staircase, releasing on July 16, is the latest of the adventure anthologies, like Journeys Through The Radiant Citadel or Keys From The Golden Vault before it. But instead of telling new stories, this one will bring back adventures from editions past.
We haven’t heard exactly which six older adventures will be included in The Infinite Staircase, but we do know the establishing story for the whole thing. The Infinite Staircase is the domain of the genie Nafas, who hopes to grant wishes from throughout the multiverse by sending you and your party on various adventures.
This means practically anything and anywhere is on the table, from any point in D&D’s 50-year history. This could include adventures like the classic Tomb of Horrors, Expedition To The Ruins Of Greyhawk (especially as we’re returning there in Vecna: Eve Of Ruin, too), or Eberron’s Eyes of the Lich Queen. It could even be used as a way to breathe life into some of fourth edition’s adventures, like Keep on the Shadowfell or Assault on Nightwyrm’s Fortress.
The catch is that, as this is an anthology release, we’ll likely not see any full-scale campaigns brought wholesale to the book. Instead, they’ll likely either be the shorter adventures, or pared-down segments of them to fit in the page count. Using only six adventures does give each more room, though, compared to the 12 found in Radiant Citadel or the 13 in Keys From The Golden Vault.
Like other anthologies, you’ll likely be able to either play these sequentially with the overarching story, or just pick and choose which ones you want to put into your own ongoing campaigns.
Between this and Eve of Ruin’s world-hopping adventures, it really feels like the first half of this year is dedicated to waving goodbye to the 5th edition of D&D
