The sci-fi RPG is proving to be a big hit for Bethesda Game Studios. However, not everyone is impressed by all aspects of the game. One Twitter user posted a video negatively comparing it to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, prompting a Cyberpunk developer to defend Starfield.
Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 are both big AAA sci-fi RPGs, so it’s natural that people will compare them. A Twitter user recently uploaded a compilation video showing actions in Starfield followed by the same action in Cyberpunk 2077. These included things like jumping into water and firing weapons around NPCs. Starfield’s water physics was less impressive, with Cyberpunk having more realistic splashes and ripples. Additionally, Cyberpunk 2077 NPCs run away when the player fires a gun while Starfield NPCs show no reaction at all.
Cyberpunk 2077 senior quest designer Patrick Mills found this a little amusing, given similar videos were used to criticize CDPR’s game. However, that doesn’t mean he thinks it is a fair comparison. “Tbc this fake criticism is actively harmful to the way the audience interacts with the medium and I hate it,” wrote Mills, “but it’s very funny to see after how many hundreds of these were made to ridicule cp2077.”
