Beating the Guardian of Faith in is essential if you want to unlock one of the strongest weapons in the game. The enemy is something of a mini-boss that can be encountered and killed in the Rosymorn Monastery, just before entering the Githyanki Crèche at the end of Act 1. The Guardian of Faith is an optional opponent but is connected to the Blood of Lathander in , so if you want the Legendary weapon with Radiant powers, you must get past the knight.
At the feet of the Guardian of Faith is the Ceremonial Battleaxe, an item that is needed to solve the first puzzle in the Blood of Lathander quest.
