Cocoon is the first game from Geometric Interactive, the studio set up by Limbo and Inside lead gameplay designer Jeppe Carlsen and award-winning programmer/composer Jakob Schmid. Announced this time last year, today we got a much longer look at its gameplay.
A puzzle adventure game, Cocoon’s central mind-bending puzzle mechanic is all about using and manipulating worlds within worlds. Each world is contained within an orb and you can jump in and out of them at set points within other worlds that are also orbs. So far so Inception, right?
The puzzling relies on these orbs, each one granting you a kind of power as you carry it – the orange orb world reveals invisible paths around your little bug protagonist, for example, or more simplistically be used to sit on trigger switches to give more progress. One puzzle shown is a little bit like Pipemania as you chuck an orb into a pipe and then move to stand on triggers to redirect the ball. Other puzzles will rely on leaping between layers quickly, to avoid damage coming from a laser sweeping past you.
Each world has a guardian that you must reach and fight, and the guardian shown had a bit of a tentacle monster vibe with bullet hell incoming damage to avoid, baiting them into hitting pillars to reveal a water jet ball that you can then use to damage it.
All in all, Cocoon looks really intriguing and we can’t wait to see more. It is coming to PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Steam in 2023. It’s also set to come to Xbox Game Pass.
