Bring It On’s Gabrielle Union took to Instagram to post a passionate tribute to Cheer star Jada Wooten. Union is uniquely indebted to cheerleading, as it provided the source material for her breakout role. Released in 2000, Bring It On follows Kirsten Dunst’s suburban cheerleading squad as they compete to win another national title, only to learn that their former captain had stolen routines from a competing squad of Black cheerleaders in East Compton. Union plays Isis, the headstrong captain of the East Compton Clovers.
Now, cheerleading has once again made its way into the public imagination, due largely in part to Netflix’s Cheer. The binge-worthy docuseries first premiered in January 2020 and introduced audiences to Navarro College’s celebrated cheerleading program. The nine-episode second season of Cheer premiered last month and focused on a number of conflicts ahead of the 2021 championships in Daytona, one of which was the longstanding rivalry between Navarro and Trinity Valley Community College. Among an impressive pool of cheer talent, TVCC’s Jada Wooten was one of Season 2’s breakout stars.

In an impassioned Instagramscreed, Gabrielle Union designated Jada Wooten the recipient of her weekly #WCW post. Set to a montage of Wooten’s high-flying cheer maneuvers, the caption reads, “I see a woman who inspires, uplifts, teaches, and WINS!!” Union also likens Wooten’s fiery leadership to her own time as a faux-cheerleader. “Jada’s talent combined with her no BS attitude is something that takes me back to the set of Bring It On.” Read the actress’ full tribute below:
