Despite being one Marvel’s most powerful and signature heroes, Black Panther’s secret comic book crossover gave him an embarrassing costume redesign. T’Challa’s Black Panther is well recognized and feared by criminals and villains worldwide but that wasn’t the case in his crossover with Quantum & Woody. Writer Christopher Priest wrote a story featured in both respective universes but lost the desired effect due to forces outside of his control. To add to the hilarity of the situation, Quantum & Woody’s version of Black Panther is a silly bordering on cartoonish interpretation that would stricken criminals with laughter instead of terror.
Created by Christopher Priest and artist M.D. Bright, Quantum & Woody was about two former childhood best friends who reunite years later when their fathers both die in a plane crash. Suspecting foul play, Eric and Woody investigate and get caught in a lab accident when a pair of experimental bracelets collide. They later learn they’re not only bonded to the bracelets but they will also die if they are separated without contact for more than a day. After learning the bracelets also gave them superpowers, Eric suggested they become superheroes, taking on the name and costume Quantum while Woody reluctantly joined him. When the series was canceled, Priest accepted an offer to return to Marvel where he began his famous run on Black Panther.
