Back in Legion, during the story of Stormheim, players witnessed Sylvanas Windrunner apparently striking some sort of deal with Helya, the cursed Vrykul ruler of Helheim, in order to obtain the Soulcage — a magical lantern with the power to compel the soul of any being. Sylvanas was later witnessed using this Soulcage on Eyir, leader of Odyn's Val'kyr. The Story of Stormheim — Alliance Perspective The Story of Stormheim — Horde Perspective At the time, most assumed this was because Sylvanas wished to force the Val'kyr to raise more Forsaken, and have wondered about the exact nature of Sylvanas' deal with Helya.
World of Warcraft: Sylvanas, the new novel by Christie Golden, answers some of these questions. In a scene set directly after the events of Secrets of the Shieldmaidens, Sylvanas and Nathanos discuss Sylvanas' activities in Stormheim.
Suddenly Nathanos was all business. «Tell me, if you can.What was your task?» «Nothing more or less than to retrieve an artifact from Helya herself.» He blinked. «A titan-forged watcher is another one of the Jailer's allies? Friends in high--or should I say, low places,» he said. Helya was sovereign of a dark realm--that of the dishonorable dead, sentenced to an eternity of fighting--and defeat.
«What was the artifact?» «The Jailer called it a Soulcage. Helya was reluctant to part with it, but I pointed out that it would benefit her as much as it would benefit her master. I was instructed to use it to command the leader of the Val'kyr to deliver the mighty souls she commands to Helya, who in turn would turn them to our purpose.» Nathanos looked impressed.
«The Val'kyr are indeed magnificent souls. Bright and glorous. All that anima flooding the Maw...» Her angry look silenced him..
