The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Picture get their own perfect Muppet equivalents. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominations for the annual Academy Awards this morning, celebrating the year's best in film. The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, led all movies with a total of 12 nominations, including nods for Cumberbatch and supporting players Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic Dune was close behind with 10, though the film was noticeably left out of the directing and acting categories.
Following a year plagued by delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in an extended awards season, 2021 didn't experience as many complications as 2020. Though streaming services continued their aggressive expansion, the theatrical experience arguably regained its supremacy, perhaps single-handedly due to Spider-Man: No Way Home. This battle between streaming and the big screen is apparent in the Best Picture nominees. The Power of the Dog and Don't Look Up both hail from Netflix, while Apple TV+'s CODA also caught the Academy's attention. Dune and King Richard were released through Warner Bros.' simultaneous releases strategy in theaters and on HBO Max. Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, and West Side Story all received traditional theatrical releases.
