A new OnePlus phone scheduled for release later this year will be powered by one of MediaTek's newly launched Dimensity 8000 series chipsets, but how powerful are these new processors? The Nord 2 was released in 2021 as the first OnePlus smartphone to be powered by a MediaTek chip, specifically the Dimensity 1200. Its success birthed a more affordable version called the Nord CE 2 which was announced in February 2022. It also comes with a MediaTek chip but a less powerful one.

MediaTek's new Dimensity 8000 series is described as “the little brother” to the flagship Dimensity 9000 that it announced in December 2021. There are two chipsets in the new series — the Dimensity 8000 and the Dimensity 8100. OnePlus has confirmed the latter will power an unnamed upcoming smartphone. Both are octa-core chips that are built on TSMC's 5nm process. Obviously, the Dimensity 8100 is the more powerful one with four Cortex-A78 Super Cores clocked at 2.85 GHz while the Dimensity 8000 has 4 Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.75 GHz. The remaining four cores on each processor are Cortex-A55 efficiency ones clocked at 2.0 GHz. There is a Mali-G610 MC6 GPU and a MediaTek APU 580 AI Engine on both phones but the Dimensity 8100 has its GPU and NPU clocked higher by 20 percent and 25 percent respectively.
