Apple’s M4 iPad Pro Models Are Up To 5.1mm Thin, So Are We Looking At Another ‘Bendgate’ Controversy? Company Executive Explains This Is Not The Case
The latest 11-inch and 13-inch M4 iPad Pro models measure 5.3mm and 5.1mm, respectively, making them the thinnest Apple products ever. The company likely attained this by switching over to Tandem OLED technology, which does not need its own backlighting and has individual pixels, allowing Apple to reduce the overall thickness. However, while there is no question that the latest iPad Pro models are design marvels, their extra sleekness can result in another ‘bendgate’ controversy, but a company executive has assured potential buyers that they have little to worry about.

To answer the question, Arun Miani, who runs the YouTube channel Mrwhosetheboss, spoke with Apple’s Senior Vice President of hardware engineering, John Ternus, regarding the durability of the latest M4 iPad Pro models. On X, Ternus reveals that the newest slates feature a protective cowling over the logic board. In addition to dissipating heat adequately and letting the M4 operate at peak performance, the metal cover gives the new iPad Pro models increased structural integrity, raising the stiffness levels of both models.

For those that do not know, the infamous ‘bendgate’ controversy for the iPad gained steam in 2018 when Apple admitted that its iPad Pro models had shipped with a slight bend in the aluminum chassis, and this was due to a side effect in the manufacturing process. The technology giant and its executives appear confident in the rigidity of the M4 iPad Pro lineup despite the thickness reduction. However, as always, there will always be some curious content creators who are impatiently waiting to put Apple’s claims to the test.
