Adobe is injecting AI into its Creative Cloud with the launch of Firefly(Opens in a new window)—a collection of generative AI models that will create images, text effects, audio, vectors, videos, and 3D for you.
Adobe announced it was embracing generative AI back in October last year when it teased a number of artificial intelligence projects that will eventually be integrated into Creative Cloud. They are all built using Adobe's Sensei AI and machine learning technology. Firefly looks to be the first AI tool to make it out of the R&D stage, with a beta now available(Opens in a new window). But what does Firefly do exactly?
The beta version of Firefly includes an AI model trained on Adobe Stock images, but only using images where the license has been opened, are in the public domain already, or the copyright has expired. This allows Firefly to generate new images based on a few descriptive words supplied by the user, or modify/expand existing images to fit the brief.
It's also possible to select an object in a drawing and ask Firefly to produce some alternative versions to use in its place. For example, selecting a car in a scene will produce alternative cars, but Firefly ensures they will look natural in the scene, too. The same can be done if you ask Firefly to produce variations on a vector sketch.
Eventually, it will be possible to achieve similar results when editing video and audio, but for now images and text effects are the focus during the beta.
As the video above demonstrates, Firefly is a powerful creative tool and capable of producing content in seconds it would take even very experienced artists hours of work to match. Once the beta is complete, Adobe intends to integrate Firefly into Illustrator,
