The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild are on strike together for the first time since 1960, with many movie and TV productions being put on pause as actors are no longer able to appear in productions or promote their work. As writers and actors are not working, Hollywood has mostly paused, and will continue to do so until the strike is over.
SAG chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland believes it could continue till next year. “I wouldn’t rule out January or February,” Crabtree-Ireland says. “Everyone should be working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen, but the only way that doesn’t happen is by finding a path to a fair deal. And we’re not going to compromise on the core principles of fairness that our employees fight for.”
The strike began on July 14, 2023, with actors lobbying for better residual pay from streaming services and protection from the growth of A.I. in the industry.
