700W AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Only Matches A Stock NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU, Hits 3.5 GHz On Chiller Cooling

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card has been tested with all of its power limits removed and draws up to an insane 700W of power.

Enthusiast overclocker, Jedi95 from the AMD Subreddit, decided to put his custom AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card to the test using the Elmor Labs EVC2SE and some DIY mods on the PCB to unlock its power limits. The graphics card used was an ASUS TUF variant which was outfitted with a EK Quantum Vector water block custom-loop cooling solution that was attached to a water chiller with a coolant temp of 10C.

The modification allowed the enthusiast to adjust both power consumption and the current of the GPU and allow it to be configurable via software. The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX was tested across various benchmarks and hit an average GPU clock of 3,333 MHz in 3DMark Time Spy & a peak GPU clock speed of 3,467 MHz in the same benchmark.

In terms of performance, the overclocked AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPU scored 38,725 points in 3DMark Time Spy, 19,137 points in 3DMark Time Spy Extreme, 20,492 points in 3DMark Port Royal, and 7,690 points in 3DMark Speedway benchmarks. These are graphics points which matter more and based on the numbers, the GPU did come very close to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090.

The more important thing here is that the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX consumed up to 700 Watts of power (696W to be exact). That's almost twice its rated TBP of 355W and while the benchmarks are a huge increase over the stock 7900 XTX, it still doesn't manage to outrightly beat the NVIDIA 4090. In fact, our slightly overclocked GeForce RTX 4090 was on par in the Time Spy benchmarks and had a massive lead in the Speedway and Port Royal benchmarks, all of that while running close to 400-500W power.
