While we may have gotten confirmation of the platforms and places to find Remedy’s upcoming follow-up to their beloved Alan Wake, via Alan Wake II — with yesterday’s PlayStation Showcase adding on top that vital release date — very few would’ve likely given a second thought to consider what format the game would come in.
Namely, that the game would be available both in physical and digital format. Well it looks like Remedy are skipping out entirely on a physical release, with Alan Wake II sticking to a digital-only release. As detailed on the game’s FAQ page, Remedy confirm that the game will be digital only across PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Explaining their reasoning, Remedy claim it’s down to more than one factor. “For one, a large number of have shifted to digital only [sic]. You can buy a Sony PlayStation 5 without a disc drive and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is a digital only console. It is not uncommon to release modern games as digital-only. Secondly, not releasing a disc helps keep the price of the game at $59.99 / €59.99 and the PC version at $49.99 / €49.99.”
Remedy end by noting that it will prevent players being forced to download a portion of the game, even with a physical disc present. Currently, the developer states, there are no plans for a physical edition now or in the near future. Remedy’s focus post-release remains on its already-announced two expansions, Night Springs and The Lake House. Alan Wake II releases on October 17 — putting an end to the mammoth thirteen-plus year wait for a follow-up in the game’s same world. Or as it is now known: Remedy’s Connected Universe, one in which the studio’s prior full release, 2019’s Control, shares the same space.
