The release of Crash Team Rumble is only a couple of weeks away, a multiplayer party game that will feature the likes of several classic Crash Bandicoot characters like Coco, Dingodile, Tawna, and the main man himself. However, developer Toys For Bob took the opportunity to introduce a new character of their own with this title, one we actually know very little about considering how close launch actually is - Catbat.
We've known about Catbat for a little while thanks to several gameplay demonstrations, but Toys For Bob has expanded on the character's backstory and creation in a recent interview with Kotaku. In this interview, creative director Dan Neil and co-studio head Paul Yan confirm that Catbat is non-binary, and that Crash Team Rumble will refer to the character with they/them pronouns. This makes Catbat the first non-binary character in the Crash Bandicoot series' history.

Original character artist for Catbat Nicholas Kole stated on Twitter late last year that he'd envisioned the character as non-binary, but was unsure as to whether Toys For Bob would keep their gender after they left the studio in 2021. Thankfully, it seems like Toys For Bob was happy to have some non-binary representation in the series, and even explain that it helps with the David Bowie-inspired design that the studio is trying to channel.
