The Legend of Zelda fans think that Tears of the Kingdom could take place around five years after the events of Breath of the Wild, pointing to the ages of Mattison, Tulin, and Purah as evidence, among other things.
One thing that Nintendo was quick to make clear in Tears of the Kingdom is that Hyrule is very different to the last time that we saw it in Breath of the Wild. It's not just Hyrule though, as it's made clear that all of the characters we saw in 2017 have grown up and matured, including Link and Zelda (who seem to have even started a relationship in the years between games).

That raises an important question - how many years has it been between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom? As you might expect considering Nintendo's stance on set timelines and age, we don't get an official answer and mostly have to piece it together through what the game shows us.
Twitter user DragonCatalyst has brought up some evidence that gives us a very good idea of how much time has passed. They note that Mattison, the daughter of Hudson and Rhondson from Breath of the Wild, is the best indicator for the time gap since she wasn't born in the first game and therefore must be an indicator of a timegap.
Although Mattison says that it could be eight years between the two games, the Twitter comments underneath her post point out that Gerudos born outside Geurdo Town are meant to be brought there once they reach four years old. Factoring in conception and birth (things I didn't expect to write in this article), this seems to indicate that it's been around five years between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
