Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has opened up about Zack Fair's involvement in the game, noting that he is an "immensely important" character who plays a "crucial" role in the story.
There are a lot of questions that need to be answered in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (especially when it comes to its ending and who is going to meet a grisly fate), but unarguably the biggest has to do with everyone's favourite Gongaga resident - Zack Fair. Final Fantasy 7 Remake ended with a big twist by revealing that Zack, or possibly an alternate-universe version of him, had somehow escaped his fated death alongside a comatose Cloud.
Although Square Enix has kept pretty quiet about how Zack is going to factor into Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, his appearance in the very first trailer for the game and inclusion in its key art have made it seem like he's going to play a big role in the story, something which has now been made even clearer by Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi.
While speaking to Game Informer about how Zack's changed fate is going to impact Rebirth, Hamaguchi noted that players will be able to "understand more of the Final Fantasy 7 worldview" and deepen their understanding of the world through him. He then goes on to say that Zack has been used to depict the combined view of the original creators of Final Fantasy 7 (Kazushige Nojima, Tetsuya Nomura, and Yoshinori Kitase) on how Midgar came to be.
That's all fairly vague, but Hamaguchi also notes that Zack is "immensely important" to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and is a "crucial, key character".
