To celebrate its 5-year anniversary, Sea of Thieves is getting an updated version called the «Sea of Thieves: 2023 Edition,» and it's currently available on the Xbox Store. Xbox Game Pass subscribers are able to claim this updated version at no extra cost.
Multiplayer games tend to do well on Xbox Game Pass, especially at launch, as it serves as a great, instant community to support it. There are plenty of examples of successful multiplayer games on subscription services, though perhaps few are as well known as Sea of Thieves. Its player count topped 30 million at one point last year, and it has only continued to grow from there thanks to Sea of Thieves' ever-expanding seasonal and midseason content.

The new Sea of Thieves 2023 Edition trailer brings attention to its world events, open-world elements, combat, and of course, booty, with the Microsoft Store listing it as a «deluxe bundle of content containing an array of cosmetics and currency.» This updated version, available via Xbox Game Pass, includes the original game with all permanent content added since launch, a bonus of 10K gold, and some Hunter cosmetics, namely the Hunter Cutlass, Pistol, Compass, Hat, Jacket, and Sails.
There are no major changes in this new edition, but anything at all in celebration of its anniversary is welcome. Not to mention, those new to the pirate game as it enters Season 9 will have a few additional items to keep, which may be helpful. Any live-service game can be intimidating to delve into when it's so far into its seasonal content, Sea of Thieves included.
