As draws closer to its launch period in June, the game's pre-release hype cycle, including a free open beta period, has revealed some key details about the game, including information regarding its local co-op mode. As the long-awaited sequel to 2012's, the game is under high scrutiny from longtime fans of the series, especially in regard to fixing some of its predecessor's more glaring flaws and avoiding a similarly controversial launch period.
While 's gameplay is naturally similar to past entries, there are a few key differences between it and previous games. Most notably, the Sanctuary of follows an open-world structure as opposed to the discrete zones of prior installments, with instanced dungeons serving as more enclosed, private environments. 's character classes and story also differ, with the Rogue class, in particular, making its first reappearance since the original game, and the story taking on a darker tone as it focuses on antagonist Lilith. Of particular interest to some fans, however, may be the game's handling of local co-op, especially compared to 's implementation of it.
Coming into, local co-op has received a few notable changes and improvements from. Perhaps most importantly, both players can now check their inventories and abilities at the same time, as each player's personal menu will appear on opposite sides of the screen — a significant step up from 's awkward UI only allowing one player to be in a menu at a time. Unfortunately, however, 's couch co-op won't be on PC, and will only allow for two players as opposed to 's four-person co-op. Additionally, some menus will still take up the entire screen, which can be an annoyance for local multiplayer.
