The Barbie movie soundtrack will feature songs by hitmakers like Dua Lipa, Lizzo, and Charli XCX, but also star Ryan Gosling. It was reported last month that star Ryan Gosling will also perform a power ballad as Ken aptly called «I'm Just Ken.» Anticipation for that number had fans curious, but Warner Bros. finally released a new spot featuring Gosling belting out his woes as Barbie's partner.
The song tells the story of Ken coming to terms that he wants to be more than a friend for Barbie as they're a team. He's later joined by other Kens who want people to know they're more than enough. Check it out below.
Oscar- and seven-time Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter Mark Ronson (A Star Is Born), along with collaborator Andrew Wyatt, were brought on board to put the songs together. Some of the songs have reached streaming services like Spotify, but it feels like Gerwig and company have been holding back for this song to drop at the right time.
Gosling has talked about his performance and how he wanted to give Ken a certain level of depth and self-awareness and how this song is his story.
«Ken...his job is beach,» Gosling told GQ back in May, explaining who Ken is to him. «For 60 years, his job has been beach. What the f--- does that even mean? And everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. But suddenly, it's like, 'No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time.' No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never f---ed with Ken. That's the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.»
Barbie hits theaters on July 21.
