Apple’s head AI of Machine Learning is John Giannandrea, and he is currently leading the division to develop tools similar to ChatGPT. Internally, the company’s engineers are calling this chatbot ‘Apple GPT,’ but alongside John, we also have Apple’s SVP of software engineering, Craig Federighi working on the same tools. Unfortunately, both executives do not agree with the direction that Apple should take as far as AI goes.
Federighi’s take on how Apple should push forward with AI was not discussed in a recent report, but AppleInsider states that the two executives are at odds on how to proceed. Though Apple has recruited engineers to work on generative AI, Bloomberg reports that the Apple GPT chatbox is strictly being used internally by the company, and it cannot work without special access. At one stage, the use of the program was halted due to security concerns, and employees could not use Apple GPT to create features that consumers would eventually use. Regardless, the company’s employees are using it to simplify their ‘day-to-day’ activities, such as prototyping products, summarizing text, and other tasks.
However, the tool cannot do anything that rival chatbots such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, or Google Bard can do right now, which can become a problem if Apple GPT is launched in the same state for consumers as it is right now. Fortunately, Apple’s work on AI is also focused on health, with the company
