Now that we know a Nintendo Direct is coming in a few hours, new rumors are coming up on what will be revealed. Here’s a new rumor that you could just find maddening.
Pyoro_ND, who is fairly new at game leaks and reveals, but recently correctly confirmed the release of Everybody-1-2-Switch and Sonic Superstars, has a few new teases of one of the games that will be announced in the show.
Two days ago, Pyoro_ND did claim that this upcoming Nintendo Direct will have a new 2D Super Mario Bros, as well as a remake of an SNES game.
Pyoro_ND also posted that the New in the New Super Mario Bros game series will not be in the title of the new 2D Super Mario Bros game.
Now, let’s talk about this briefly. New Super Mario Bros was a relaunch of 2D Mario games on the Nintendo DS. Selling 30 million copies, it would be the best selling title on the DS, and one of the bestselling games of all time.
The series continued with New Super Mario Bros Wii on the Wii, New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS, and New Super Mario Bros U on the Wii U, later rereleased on the Switch as the special edition New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe.
In spite of New Super Mario Bros’ financial success as a franchise, it has received a lot of criticism, mainly for not bringing much new in the plumber’s 2D platform outings. While non-Mario fans wouldn’t have thought it, the first run of 2D Mario games, from Super Mario Bros to Super Mario World, each brought new ideas that significantly changed the game, and would prove to be influential to different games and game series.
All of these teasers suggest that Nintendo has already decided to move on from New Super Mario Bros and have come up with a completely new 2D platformer idea.
