The New Denpa Men is a free-to-play jrpg where you catch “Denpa Men”, decorate an island and go to various other islands to explore towns and dungeons. The battle system is a turn-based affair, with auto attack options and direct control options. Its said that the game can be beaten without paying anything for it.
There is an option to buy jewels with real money. The jewels will let you take part in chances to catch rare and powerful Denpa Men. I haven’t bought any of the jewels and likely never will. So I don’t know how that part of the game works but I can tell you about the rest.
On the 3DS, The Denpa Men had two games. You could catch Denpa Men and you’d see them floating through the air around you thanks to the 3DS camera. The Nintendo Switch doesn’t have a camera, so you don’t see the Denpa Men in reality anymore.
Instead, you see them in a black area, which isn’t as interesting. You can still use the Switch’s gyro controls to catch them or use the analog controls. I definitely prefer the analog controls but its nice to have options.
Meanwhile decorating your island is kind of neat but hopefully the island expands even more because right now its a bit too small. Also, there’s not too many options to decorate with yet.
When you go exploring other islands, you have to use a menu to pick which area you want to go and there’s the story levels that unlock as you progress in the game and special event levels too. The regular story levels look better than the event levels overall.
The weirdest thing about Denpa Men though is that the game has to connect to the internet for battles against enemies and when you open treasure chests. The quick little load time that pops up for battles and chests is a bit annoying.
That said, the turn-based battles are pretty fun! Some of them are easy while other battles offer a bit more challenge. You’ll definitely need to do some battling to level your characters up for harder boss battles.
I also enjoyed exploring the dungeons too.
