On occasion, this loose approach to storytelling can prove a problem for The Conners. For example, The Conners season 4 rendered Harris's storyline pointless, with the sitcom seemingly abandoning a compelling feud between her and her mother, Darlene. That said, this approach also allows The Conners to revisit stories that seemed to be wrapped up for good, allowing the show to fix plot holes in the process.

For example, the next episode of The Conners (season 4, episode 18) is titled “The Best Laid Plans, A Contrabassoon, And A Sinking Feeling." This alone implies that the show could finally be ready to address the wild expense of Mark’s new extracurricular activity, playing the contrabassoon. Although Darlene suggested learning the contrabassoon as a surefire fast track to a college scholarship, The Conners failed to mention that buying — and often even renting — the instrument is incredibly expensive, which could make this idea a non-starter.
