Ned Leeds is expected to become Hobgoblin at some point in his Marvel Cinematic Universe history, and while Spider-Man: No Way Home included some hints at this transformation, it was actually set up since Spider-Man: Homecoming. After years of waiting for Spider-Man to join the MCU, a deal between Sony and Marvel made it possible for Peter Parker to make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, after which he got his first solo movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming followed Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he did his best to balance high school life with his superhero duties while also facing a new enemy: Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton). Accompanying Peter in his first solo adventure as part of the MCU were aunt May (Marisa Tomei), Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), MJ (Zendaya), and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon). The latter’s MCU version has been very different from the one in the comic books, as this Ned is actually Peter’s best friend rather than a competitive colleague, but he looks to be on his way to becoming an enemy of Spider-Man just like in the source material.
