is set to expand on the 2018 hit, and much like its name suggests, the film will take place across a variety of different universes.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, writer-producer Christopher Miller — who also produced the first film — spoke about the leaps that the sequel is set to make. Namely, Miller said, is just how big the film actually is, with the writer noting that the film takes place across “five different universes.”
“Our contract with the audience is to bring them something they’ve never seen before,” Miller said. “The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension,” Miller explains. “This is about Miles heading off into others.”
In the same interview, co-director Joaquim Dos Santos also teased the scope of the film, saying that the team “essentially made five films in one” due to how “robust” each universe feels.
“Each world is a robust place,” said Santos. “We’ve essentially made five films in one.”
Of the five universes set to be featured in the sequel, four are known, including Gwen Stacy’s Earth-65, which has been seen in trailers of the film and has a distinct watercolor art style, Mumbattan, an Indian-inspired city, Nueva York, the home of Spider-Man 2099 (played by Oscar Isaac), and New London, a city that will be protected by Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya).
As for the fifth universe, that one is being kept a secret, with writer-producer Phil Lord promising that “it goes hard” and will feature “jaw-dropping” visuals.
is slated to premiere on June 2, 2023.
