Samsung recently renewed its licensing agreement with AMD to bring mobile GPUs to smartphones in the future. After the disappointing launch of the Exynos 2200, which actually features the Xclipse 920 based on AMD’s RDNA2 architecture, we should be greeted with improved iterations a few years from now. According to one tipster, the Exynos 2500 will feature a custom GPU that also carries many optimizations.
On Twitter, Revegnus shares that the Exynos 2500 could likely be the ‘dream chip’ that Samsung is secretly working on. Though the exact specifications were not mentioned in the tweet, it is said to be paired with a custom GPU that will be based on AMD’s technology. To remind you, Samsung has previously been reported to be working on a custom GPU, and it is likely that the Korean giant will take advantage of the renewed licensing agreement.
However, it will take years before this new Samsung GPU materializes, which is why the Exynos 2500 was mentioned because, before its launch, we still have the Exynos 2400 to look forward to. The new SoC is said to be made for the Galaxy lineup of smartphones, hinting that Samsung will eventually stop depending on Qualcomm. Unfortunately, to do that, it will have to develop a chipset that is competitive against other players.
Also, the company currently trails behind TSMC in the foundry race, probably due to its inferior chip manufacturing process. However, there are rumors that chips mass produced on the second-generation 3nm GAA process will arrive in the second half of 2024, assuming there are a few roadblocks in the launch schedule. Samsung could leverage its advanced chip manufacturing technology to create the Exynos 2500, but it is too early to tell which node will be used.
