The Super Mario Bros. Movie seemingly ditched a bunch of game-inspired tracks in favour of licenced music, and fans are pissed. This comes after the soundtrack was released online, featuring some unused tracks that would have fit into some key scenes from the film perfectly.
Now that we have access to the full soundtrack, fans are disappointed that Illumination opted to instead use so much licenced music. Some fans are even editing the original music back into the scenes they were likely to mean to appear in, making everything much more Mario-y, and less like any other Illumination film.

While it's hard to tell without going back to the cinema to verify, it seems that at least four tracks - or sections from larger tracks - went unused in favour of licenced music. This is backed up by fan-made clips shared online, showing that the scrapped music fits into most of these scenes seamlessly.
In some instances, it even seems that the scenes were animated with this more game-inspired soundtrack in mind, as it perfectly follows the harmonies of the score. That would suggest that songs such as Holding Out for a Hero and Take On Me were fairly late additions to the film, perhaps in a bid to keep parents entertained.
While the movie as a whole is going down well with fans, it's this use of non-original/Mario music that's a point of contention for many. True enough, these moments can make it feel like any other kids' movie, and with Mario already having such a great back catalogue of music tracks, it's easy to see why fans are disappointed more didn't make it into the film.
