According to new leaks, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 originally had several symbiote bosses and even some plot points that were cut from the game before its release last year. The sequel to Insomniac Games’ hit superhero game launched to rave reviews and massive support from fans in October and players are still enjoying the title and discussing the franchise. Observers are already speculating about possible Peter Parker storylines for Spider-Man 3, and plenty of gamers are already waiting for DLC for the current entry.
Among the new elements the sequel brought to Insomniac’s series are the iconic symbiote and, through it, the symbiote suit and the villain Venom. The deadly alien organism and its various iterations have long been fan favorites and it makes sense that they would make an appearance in the latest Spider-Man game. Indeed, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has numerous symbiote references beyond just Venom that knowledgeable fans will notice throughout the title. It appears that some of the symbiotes, however, were originally meant to play a bigger role in the game.
A series of tweets from a user going by Worm show data pulled from the PC version of Spider-Man 2 which indicate that several symbiote bosses were planned to be featured in the game at one point. Specifically, models for the symbiote creatures Phage, Lasher, Agony, and Riot were discovered as well as data which hint at a plot based on the Venom limited comic series Separation Anxiety. This comic specifically revolved around Venom and the other symbiotes so it would fit well with these planned bosses.
It’s not clear how far along plans for symbiote bosses and a more detailed symbiote plot advanced at Insomniac before the content was cut. This isn't the only symbiote-related content that was ultimately dropped, however.Spider-Man 2 cut a suit that could have fit with the symbiote plot as well, and there have been reports that a great deal of other Venom elements were dropped before release.
Knowing that so much
