Get ready for a slimmer PlayStation 5. Sony is refreshing the product’s design to cut down on its overall footprint.
Next month in the US, the company will start selling the new model, which is designed to replace the existing hardware. “The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models,” the company wrote in a Tuesday blog post.
Both models also include 1TB of storage instead of 825GB. But outside of that, the new hardware packs the same specs.
Despite the changes, the price for the PS5 disc edition is staying the same at $499.99. But in some bad news, the redesigned PS5 digital edition will cost more at $449.99, up from $399.99.
On the plus side, the refreshed PS5 digital edition can now be upgraded to support an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive if you buy a $79.99 attachment.
Overall, the refreshed PS5 retains the same design philosophy as the existing hardware. But the company has decided to break down the back and front cover plates into four separate panels. The top plates come in a “glossy look” while the bottom plates remain matte.
The other change is that Sony plans on selling “vertical stand” for the new PS5 models separately, forcing consumers to pay $29.99 for it. However, the refreshed models will come with a horizontal stand for free.
Sony didn’t give an exact launch date. But the company plans on selling the refreshed PS5 models through local retailers and via the direct.playstation.com site.
“Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available,” the company added.
