Sony says PS5 has hit 50 million sales, just one week slower than PS4 did
videogameschronicle.comSony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has claimed that PlayStation 5 sales have surpassed 50 million units worldwide.
The console reached the sales milestone on December 9, 2023, a little over three years after it launched in November 2020.
PS4 reportedly hit 50 million sales after 160 weeks, which is one week faster than PS5 managed, although the last-gen system didn’t face the same Covid-related supply issues that have checked the current-gen console’s momentum.
“Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners,” said outgoing SIE CEO Jim Ryan.
“We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one.”
Sony announced that PS5 had reached 40 million sales in July 2023.
The company is aiming to ship 25 million PS5 consoles during its current fiscal year ending in March 2024. If achieved, it would beat a 25-year-old console sales record set when the original PlayStation shipped 22.6 million units over a 12-month period.
Sony launched a new PS5 Slim model in November. Once inventory of the launch model has sold out, the Slim console will become the only one available.
It was recently claimed that Sony is planning to launch a PS5 Pro console in late 2024, and that it will feature a proprietary DLSS-like solution.
