Simu Liu takes issue with Ethan Hawke's use of Mandarin in Moon Knight. The Disney+ miniseries stars Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, a Jewish mercenary who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and one of his identities is Steven Grant, a British gift shop employee, who additionally is subject to blackouts and memories of another life. Hawke plays the religious cult leader, Arthur Harrow, who was the avatar for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu before Spector, and is now the avatar to the Egyptian goddess Ammit.
Liu is coming off his starring role as Xu Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, which is the first Marvel film with an Asian-led cast and was a critical and commercial success, with a sequel already confirmed. The role elevated Liu to star status and major acclaim and he will next have major roles in Greta Gerwig's upcoming movie Barbie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as Arthur the King with Mark Wahlberg. Liu, who is of Chinese descent, has also been an advocate for Asian equality and support of representation in Hollywood. While Ethan Hawke's villainous performance onMoon Knight has been getting major praise, Liu had some comments about one particular scene.

Liu has now taken to social media, remarking on a specific scene where Hawke's character is speaking Mandarin, joking about how poor it is. In a scene from the latest episode of Moon Knight titled «Summon the Suit», Harrow is having a conversation with Grant, before speaking Mandarin to one of his members, Jamila, played by Miriam Nyarko.
