Warning! Spoilers ahead for Moon Knight episode 3.
Marvel's Moon Knight episode 3 took a deeper dive into Layla’s background, and in doing so, cleverly set up the potential for a new version of Captain America in the MCU. It is revealed that Layla is originally from Egypt and her father was an archaeologist who was murdered, a fact that continues to haunt Layla to this day. Upon returning to her home country, she is warned not to dig up the past, but whether it’s to protect her from dredging up old wounds or shield her from the truth is up for debate. What's more, the series' antagonist, Arthur Harrow, cryptically suggests that Layla's husband, Marc Spector, a.k.a. Moon Knight, had something to do with her father's death.
By this point, it's clear the mystery surrounding Layla’s father and the circumstances of his murder will be a plot point for the series going forward. Khonshu has already threatened Marc that Layla will be his next avatar if Marc ever left his service. While Layla is undeniably a skilled and fearless fighter, Khonshu's choice for his next avatar may stem from reasoning deeper than a threat to Marc or an admiration of her abilities, but rather an interest in her family history. The mystery of Layla and her father could have comic book origins that have piqued the interest of Moon Knight's Egyptian moon god, and in doing so, set up a new protector for Egypt.
