Sega did the world a massive favor when it released on PC and consoles. It bundled together some of its best classic games into one collection for a relatively affordable price and made them all completely playable on modern hardware. It was a great day for fans and those interested in game preservation.
The collection launched in 2018, and since then, players have been enjoying some truly underrated Sega Genesis games in a much more convenient format. However, it seems like Sega has changed its mind as it is pulling the collection alongside a string of other incredibly popular games. While the move has upset fans,it is also hugely negatively impacting the hard work of game preservationists.
Sega has decided out of the blue to pull from the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox, as well as a collection of classic Dreamcast games from Steam. It hasn't given a reason why it is doing this, only that, as of December 6, none of the games listed on the official SEGA website will be available for purchase. This includes some of the best Dreamcast games ever made, as well as the aforementioned, which bundles some of the best games from that console.
It's important to note that outside of North America, the collection is called. This is also being delisted because it is the exact same product, just renamed due to the regional naming of the console. Additionally, while these games will no longer be available for purchase, those who already own them can continue to play and download them beyond December 6.
Some of the games being delisted include,, ,,,,, and. Obviously, among some of the best Genesis games there are a handful of obscure titles that are being delisted. However, Sega removing all of these from various digital storefronts across PC and consoles is bad for the consumer and for game preservation as a whole.
