Developer Saber Interactive will explore the potential for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 story DLC, and a full sequel, after the game’s early success.
Space Marine 2 attracted two million players within a day of its September 9 release for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, according to publisher Focus Interactive.
Speaking to IGN, Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits said it was the fastest-selling game the former id Software studio head has ever worked on, including multiple Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein and Rage titles.
He also revealed that Space Marine 2 had a budget less than half the size of Doom Eternal’s, which was his last game at id Software.
“Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel,” Willits said. “We’re literally just catching our breath. This is two weeks out. We just need to get the dust to settle.
“But I can confidently say that we will not disappoint our Warhammer fans in the future. It’s too big of a success! I know that’s an obvious thing to say, but hopefully we’ll be working on Space Marine content for a long time.”
On the subject of a potential sequel, he added: “We just have to figure it out. I would love to do it, yes. Yes, yes, yes! There’s so many different factions… there are other chapters, too, that are interesting…”
Space Marine 2 was revealed during The Game Awards in 2021 and originally scheduled for release in 2023 prior to a delay.
Its makers suffered a setback when a developer build of the game, which was reportedly playable from start to finish, leaked in July.
