For the first time since the original Raspberry Pi was unveiled way back in 2011, a new flagship Raspberry Pi product has been announced before it's available to buy.
The Raspberry Pi 5 will launch before the end of October and promises to offer up to a 3x speed improvement and 2x GPU performance compared to the Raspberry Pi 4. The I/O bandwidth has increased to the point where you can drive a couple of 4K displays at 60fps.
All that additional performance is possible thanks to just about everything on the Raspberry Pi 5 board being updated. The CPU is a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU supported by a VideoCore VII GPU, and two variations of the board will be offered with a choice of 4GB or 8GB of RAM.
If you've used a Raspberry Pi before, you'll be pleased to hear the Pi 5 will include a power button for the first time, there's also a single-lane PCIe port to attach PCIe and NVMe devices, and a real-time clock powered from an external battery. The microSD card slot remains, but now includes support for high-speed SDR104 mode.
The 4GB version of the Raspberry Pi 5 will cost $60, and the 8GB variant is $80. The extra performance means the existing power supply used with the Raspberry Pi 4 isn't good enough and you'll need to invest in a 5V 5A USB-C power supply when upgrading. Raspberry Pi is selling an official 27W power supply if you need one. Old cases also won't work, and the new Raspberry Pi Case for Raspberry Pi 5 includes a fan. There's also an active fan available for use outside a case.
The Raspberry Pi 5 is available to pre-order from a wide range of resellers around the world, with stock expected to ship around Oct. 23. However, if you're a print subscriber to The MagPi or HackSpace, a single-use code
