And just like that, two weeks after it launched, Concord is officially offline indefinitely. A 1.3GB patch has been deployed confirming that Sony has pulled the plug on the first-person shooter, and you can no longer connect. The release – arguably the biggest flop in PlayStation first-party history – sold an estimated 25k copies. If you did buy a copy, you’ll be entitled to a full refund.
An in-game message reads:
Concord has been taken offline beginning September 6, 2024. For refund and other details please visit http://www.playstation.com/concordupdate. Thank you again to all the Freegunners who have joined us in the Concord galaxy.
When we reviewed the Firewalk Studios debut last month, we noted that its team-based competitive gameplay was decent – but we did take issue with the title’s lack of identity and dismal character designs. “Concord is a clean and well-meaning first-person shooter, with no shady business practices to boot,” we pointed out.
However, the game completely and utterly failed to find an audience – a face-plant from the format holder worsened by the contrast with the acclaimed release of Astro Bot today. The title was rejected by enthusiasts put off by Sony’s live service push, ridiculed by social media users for its cast, and generally ignored by the wider public. All of these things combined made for an unprecedentedly bad launch.
Committed Concordians
Officially, the developer says it will be exploring its options with how to take the title forward; our expectation is that it’ll meet a grisly fate behind-the-scenes. There is the slightest sliver of a chance that the title will be brought back as a free-to-play affair, but given just how badly this title has collapsed, we’d be surprised if it ever saw the light of day again.
