After Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater's remake was finally revealed, Persona 3 getting the same treatment may well have taken the crown of worst-kept secret in video games. Now that has officially been shown off too, its creators have revealed Persona 3 Reload might not be everything fans of the series are expecting.
While you may have assumed Reload will include modernized versions of the base Persona 3 game and its additional content/spinoffs, that is not going to be the case. Reload producer Ryota Niitsuma and chief director Kazuhisa Wada told IGN following the reveal at the Xbox Showcase that neither FES nor Portable will be a part of Reload.

“Since the basic concept of the Persona 3 remake was to remake the Persona 3, we don't have the FES and Portable contents included,” Niitsuma confirmed. “We wanted to really genuinely work on recreating the Persona 3 experience.”
Persona 3 launched on PS2 and received FES as additional content via an entirely new disc a year later. Persona 3 Portable was, as you might expect, a handheld version of the game that launched on PSP. A lack of content from the latter version in Reload might upset Persona 3 fans the most. It will mean no ability to play as different characters in Reload, including Persona 3's female protagonist.
That doesn't mean FES and Portable won't be a part of the remake eventually though, of course. While Niitsuma and Wada weren't prepared to comment, it seems likely more will be coming to Persona 3 Reload in the future, whether via DLC or an updated version of the game. Persona 5 got that via Royal, and Persona 4 has Golden.
