Wowhead and jessirocks got the chance to sit down and interview Production Director Tiffany Wat and Lead Game Designer Rex Dickson at Gamescom 2024 in Cologne, Germany this past week. With the Vessel of Hatred expansion launching on October 8th, they were able to cover new information on Mercenary Skill Trees, how the Party Finder system will work to connect players with similar interests, and how long it will take players to conquer the Dark Citadel!
This is the second of two exclusive interviews we conducted with Diablo 4's development team at Gamescom.
Stay tuned for our coverage of the Campfire Chat, on August 29th, that's been referenced throughout both of these interviews as being when Blizzard announces overhauls to the difficulty and Paragon systems, as well as leveling progression!

Wowhead: It’s very awesome to see the Mercenaries getting announced. I know they were just announced, but do you all have any plans to add more Mercenaries in the future? With upcoming expansions, or even Seasons?
With anything we develop, there’s always more than what actually makes it into the game. The four Mercenaries we are bringing to Vessel of Hatred are the ones we’re most proud of, i.e., they are the most refined and balanced, and they bring a lot of gameplay options to the table.
Who knows how big the Pale Hand really is, and if there are more than just the four? We’ll have to wait and see.
jessirocks: Do you have any new information about leveling the Mercenaries, or how we can get gear for them?
Tiffany: Sure! They are a little different from the Mercenaries in Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 in that Diablo 4’s Mercenaries won’t have gear you can equip onto them. Instead, they’ll have their own specific.
