Recent discoveries made with an in-depth look at the Switch 18.0.0 firmware seem to suggest the Nintendo Switch 2 is indeed going to be backward compatible with its predecessor, as rumored in the past few months.
As detailed by Famiiboards user Pokemaniac, the Switch 18.0.0 firmware update added support for a new type of mount point, a way to expose files to games, classified as "compat". This new type of mount point could be used for higher quality assets for the Nintendo Switch 2, shader caches, making certain files available contextually as part of a unified file system for cross-gen games, protecting critical files in the next-gen consoles from piracy and emulation, or potentially injecting compatibility shims as part of the backward compatibility system.
The more rumors circulate on the Nintendo Switch 2 console, the more the wait for the system becomes difficult to bear for the many fans eagerly awaiting its release. Very little is currently know for certain about the system other than the fact that it has been in the works for a while. Every other information has come from leaks and rumors, such as the fact that AMD lost the bid to design the system due to handheld mode performance and power consumption concerns and that the new NVIDIA chip that powers the system will provide DLSS and Ray Reconstruction support, as well as higher resolution than the Steam Deck.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has yet to be officially revealed. We will keep you updated on the console as soon as possible, so stay tuned for all the latest news.
