Nintendo Switch Online may not be the first service one thinks of when Halloween rolls around but the platform is doing its best to get into the spirit by offering subscribers some of the N64's creepiest games. Nintendo has usually championed itself as a family-friendly company with a catalog of titles that appeal to both adults and children. The N64 was an odd time for Nintendo as it attempted to retain its established reputation while slowly bringing in darker titles to compete with the PlayStation One.
Announced on X (formerly Twitter), Nintendo revealed that and are now available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion subscribers.
The latest additions have been widely praised by users as both have a cult status thanks to their emphasis on horror and mature themes. Neither game has the scares of modern experiences but for older players looking for the nostalgia hit,both and harken back to an age when the industry was still learning how to make horror mainstream.
When it comes to playing these retro classics, modern users may struggle with their dated controls and designs. Having said that, , which was originally released in 1998, has aged remarkably well from a mechanical perspective. What it lacks in visual quality it more than makes for with gameplay that's fast and exciting; Speeding around a jungle while blasting away dinosaurs with an arsenal of high-powered weapons will never not be fun.
As for, there's a reason this 1999 action-adventure game isn't as well-remembered as. Based on the comic book series published by Valiant Comics, its atmosphere and tone are unlike anything else on the N64: Its grim and gritty world filled with dark magic and twisted killers made it divisive amongst users when it launched. It can be difficult to play now though since the controls and combat haven't aged gracefully.
Nintendo Switch Online offers subscribers a wide library of retro titles to play, and a few of these games stand out as the very best of the bunch.
