The Snapdragon X Elite and the Snapdragon X Plus will not be the only chipset members that Qualcomm introduces as it plans to take away the ARM notebook market share from Apple by launching new tiers that will be found in more affordable machines. CEO Christiano Amon previously hinted that next year, customers could purchase Windows-powered devices with Snapdragon SoCs for as low as $700, but the company has another surprise; introducing a new silicon that will be found in entry-level $600 products.
So far, Qualcomm has launched chipsets with 12-core, 10-core, and 8-core CPUs, with the lower core count representing less capable silicon but powering more affordable notebooks. According to a slide shared by XDA, a new Snapdragon X SoC will arrive in the market and seemingly power machines with an incredibly low $600 price. Given that Qualcomm has not shared the specifications, we could be looking at something with a 6-core CPU and the same NPU as the other variants.
This is an incredible move from Qualcomm because, for the longest time, this segment has been dominated by Apple and its wave of MacBook models featuring the technology giant’s custom chipsets. At the time of writing, the cheapest portable Mac to feature the Apple Silicon is the M2 MacBook Air, and it is listed on Amazon for $799 for the 8GB unified RAM and 256GB storage model after a $200 discount. The only hurdle Qualcomm has to overcome is to convince developers to bring native apps to the Snapdragon platform, which is an obstacle that Apple has already scaled.
Of course, a potential Snapdragon X chipset with a 6-core CPU will mean lower multi-core performance, but as long as it can deliver something equal to Apple’s M1,
