Currently, it’s unknown whether or not the new Godzilla movie will be a sequel to Godzilla Minus One or an entirely new project centered around the iconic kaiju.
Yamazaki’s work on Godzilla Minus One earned him massive praise when the film was released. Not only was the film the most successful Japanese Godzilla movie of all time, but Yamazaki’s crew became the first Japanese crew to ever receive an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
The film was also a massive success at the box office, earning over $115 million at the global box office against a budget of just $10-15 million, becoming the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2023 and surpassing Shin Godzilla as the most successful Godzilla movie to come from Japan.
Prior to his work on Godzilla Minus One, Yamazaki had already been one of the most successful figures in the Japanese film industry, earning eight Japanese Academy Awards, five Nikkan Sports Film Awards, two Hochi Film Awards, and an Asian Film Award. However, his work on Godzilla Minus One catapulted him into superstardom.
