director Takashi Yamazaki has officially partnered with Sony Pictures for his upcoming English-feature directorial debut film titled,. Sony successfully won the project through a competitive bidding war against a number of studios.
Prior to finding international recognition with Godzilla Minus One, Yamazaki is also known for directing movies such as Space Battleship Yamato, The Eternal Zero, Stand by Me Doraemon, The Great War of Archimedes, Dragon Quest: Your Story, Lupin III: The First, and Stand by Me Doraemon 2.
Grandgear will be written, produced, and directed by Yamazaki. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams has also signed on to produce for Bad Robot, along with Glen Zipper. Plot and character details about the movie remained under wraps.
This comes after the massive success of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, which serves as the first Godzilla and non-English language film to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The epic period action movie was also written and directed by Yamazaki. It currently has a near-perfect Tomatometer score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 206 reviews. During its theatrical run, it garnered a worldwide gross of more than $115 million at the box office.
“In postwar Japan, Godzilla brings new devastation to an already scorched landscape. With no military intervention or government help in sight, the survivors must join together in the face of despair and fight back against an unrelenting horror,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
