During the Tudum global fan event in São Paulo, Brazil, Netflix announced the cast members for the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game. Lee Jung-jae will return as Gi-hun, the lead character facing financial struggles. Hwang Dong-hyuk will resume his role as director and executive producer. Production is scheduled to begin later this year.
The returning cast includes Lee Byung-hun as the enigmatic Front Man, Wi Ha-jun as the police detective Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo, who will also make a comeback. Joining the series for Season 2 are Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun. The involvement of Oh Yeong-su, who played Oh Il-nam in the first season, has yet to be confirmed. Netflix has not provided a specific release date for Squid Game Season 2 at this time.
Squid Game debuted in September 2021 and became a global sensation. It achieved record-breaking viewership, surpassing 100 million viewers at launch and accumulating over 1.65 billion viewing hours in just 28 days.
Netflix also provided a preview of Squid Game: The Challenge, a competition show inspired by the original series. The show will feature 456 players competing for a substantial cash prize of $4.56 million, the largest offered in a reality series. Contestants will face various games and challenges, putting their strategies and alliances to the test. Earlier this year, medics were called in after several contestants claimed they'd suffered severe injuries due to competing in cold temperatures for the show.
