Netflix has unveiled a teaser trailer for The Archies, an upcoming Indian musical movie inspired by Archie Comics. The teaser debuted during Netflix's TUDUM event and provides a glimpse into the highly anticipated musical.
According to Variety, the Archie comics are popular on the Indian subcontinent, leading to this adaptation. The teaser reveals that the story is set in 1964 in Riverdale, featuring references like Pop Tate's Chok'lit Shop. Viewers can see the teenage characters singing, dancing, and getting a taste of the music in the movie.
The Archies is directed by Zoya Akhtar and co-written by Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Ayesha DeVitre. Tiger Baby, the production company led by Akhtar and Kagti, produced the film with Sharad Devarajan from Graphic India. Akhtar previously directed the acclaimed musical film Gully Boy in 2019.
Akhtar, a devoted fan of the comic books since her childhood, expressed her excitement and the pressure of working on this project in a recent interview with Variety. Akhtar said, «I am super excited to have the chance to bring The Archies to life. It was a large part of my childhood and teenage years. The characters are iconic and globally loved, which is also why I am a little nervous. I have to make sure the film stokes the nostalgia of a generation that grew up on the comic and yet resonates with the young adults today.»
The cast includes Mihir Ahuja, Dot, Yuvraj Menda, and Vedang Raina. Notably, the movie features Khushi Kapoor, Suhana Khan, and Agastya Nanda, prominent names in the Indian entertainment industry.
The premiere date for The Archies on Netflix is yet to be announced.
