Netflix has officially unveiled the first look at, its newest stop-motion animated series based on beloved Sanrio characters. The show is expected to make its debut sometime in July 2025.
“I’m thrilled that this project is finally announced in this important year marking the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi,” director Tomoki Misato said in a press release. “This momentous project motivated all of us to come together, take on various challenges, and push the envelope with stop-motion. I hope everyone will enjoy this exciting story set in our handcrafted Mariland, the thrilling action that pushes the limits of stop-motion, and, of course, the cute and dynamic characters.”
The series is produced by Toruku, marking the first stop-motion animation series from the studio which was established as part of WIT Studio.
Set in the whimsical place of Mariland, the show will follow the story of a straightforward and cheerful girl named My Melody, who cares deeply for her younger brother. She will be joined by her self-proclaimed rival Kuromi, who’s described as a troublemaker. Both characters are very popular among Sanrio fans, with Kuromi ranking Top 3 in the 2024 Sanrio character ranking.
My Melody & Kuromi is directed by Tomoki Misato from a screenplay written by Shuko Nemoto, who wrote the script during the pandemic. Nemoto said the script will reflect her love for the world of My Melody and Kuromi, promising that adults and children will have favorite scenes and lines from the show.
