Magic: The Gathering is celebrating 50 years of Dungeons & Dragons with a crossover draft event based on Baldur's Gate 3, bringing iconic characters like Elminster, Astarion, Lae'zel, and more back from May 17 to 19.
"As the event begins, you'll distribute three Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate Draft Boosters and one [...] Collector Booster to each player," the announcement page explains."They'll open the Collector Booster first: its contents will be part of their final card pool. Then, they'll draft the remaining three packs, picking two cards at a time. Once they build 60-card decks, send them to battle in pods of four."
When every player is ready, they'll dive into the dungeon, an "oversized" printable card that will be placed on the table. It's themed around all three acts of Baldur's Gate 3, taking us from the Nautiloid crash to the Steel Watch Foundry, Ansur's Sanctum, and Temple of Bhaal. Whenever you cast your commander, you can start at Crash Landing. Then, each time you Venture into the Dungeon or re-cast your commander, you can move to one of the next rooms on the card.
Each location has a corresponding effect, tied to what happens in the game. For instance, entering Balthazar's Lab allows you to "Return up to two target creature cards from your graveyard to your hand" - a clever way to incorporate his necromancy. The Gauntlet of Shar makes each opponent lose five life, a play on how we sacrifice blood to enter its challenges in-game.
The full list of locations is as follows:
It even incorporates both ways of getting to the Shadowlands from Act 1, with the Grymforge and Ebonlake Grotto being the Underdark, and the Mountain Pass/Githyanki Creche being the Mountain Pass/Githyanki Creche.
